We always go by the adage by Lao Tzu which states "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, feed him for a lifetime."
We can draw an analogy between fishing and selling as fishing requires tremendous foresight and planning. A good fisherman needs to identify the nature and habitat of his catch. Once he has identified the same he needs to tempt the prey with a well-dressed bait and patiently wait for the catch. At an initial thought fishing might not seem to be a likely analogy for sales, but a careful thought draws out several commonalities.
In the 21st century selling to the right customer is like fishing out a big fish from a swarm of small ones. Effective sales starts with carefully identifying your potential customer and then zeroing down on his needs and decision making process. After having identified a prospective customer the sales person needs to customize product information to the taste and thinking pattern of the customer. The last part often the toughest but the most rewarding one is a patient wait. It would be fair to say that today a sales executive needs to fish out his/ her customer.
