Can Improving Growth And Attractive Valuation Drive HDFC Bank Higher?
Leadership Clarity May Remove A Major Overhang
According to UBS, the resolution of leadership-related uncertainty could become an important trigger for a near-term re-rating in HDFC Bank. Investors generally prefer stability and visibility in management succession, and clarity on this front may help improve market confidence.
Loan Growth Showing Early Signs Of Recovery
UBS highlighted that loan growth improved to 15.6% during Q1FY27, indicating early signs of recovery after a period of moderation. The brokerage expects loan growth to move toward the 15% range over FY27-FY29, supported by healthy retail demand and gradual normalization across lending segments.
Sustained credit growth remains one of the most important drivers for private-sector banks because it directly influences interest income and long-term earnings potential.
Margins And Profitability Expected To Improve
UBS expects HDFC Bank's net interest margins to improve toward 3.5%, supported by a greater share of retail loans in the lending mix. Retail loans generally offer better yields than many corporate lending segments, helping improve profitability.
The brokerage also expects Return on Assets (RoA) to improve to approximately 1.9% during FY27 and FY28. Higher profitability ratios indicate more efficient utilization of the bank's balance sheet and capital base.
Strong Deposit Growth Supports Expansion
A strong deposit franchise remains one of HDFC Bank's biggest competitive strengths. UBS forecasts deposit growth of approximately 15.5% CAGR during FY26-FY28.
Healthy deposit growth provides a stable funding base, helping the bank support future credit expansion while maintaining balance-sheet strength.
Valuation Remains A Key Attraction
UBS notes that HDFC Bank currently trades at around 1.4 times FY28 estimated Price-to-Book Value (P/BV), which it considers attractive relative to the bank's long-term growth potential and profitability profile.
If loan growth accelerates, margins improve and profitability strengthens as expected, investors may increasingly focus on the valuation gap compared with historical averages.
