India has witnessed a dramatic expansion in installed solar-power capacity since 2014. But adding renewable generation capacity is only one part of building a reliable electricity system. Solar generation varies with sunlight, while electricity demand continues after sunset. Without adequate battery storage and transmission infrastructure, some of the renewable capacity created can remain underutilised even as consumers continue to experience power shortages.

The Question Is No Longer Simply How Much Solar India Can Build

India's renewable-energy push has focused heavily on increasing solar capacity. The next phase requires a different question: How much variable solar generation can the electricity system efficiently absorb without adequate storage and transmission infrastructure? Solar electricity is inherently time-dependent. Generation can be abundant during sunny daytime hours but falls sharply in the evening, just when electricity demand may remain substantial. Consequently, installed capacity alone does not guarantee round-the-clock electricity availability.

Battery Energy Storage Systems can help bridge the timing mismatch between renewable generation and electricity consumption. Instead of losing or curtailing surplus solar electricity during periods of high generation, batteries can potentially:

  • Release electricity when solar generation declines.

  • Improve utilisation of existing renewable assets.

Solar projects are frequently located in areas with strong irradiation and available land, while major electricity-consuming centres can be hundreds of kilometres away. That makes transmission capacity critical. If transmission infrastructure does not expand alongside renewable generation, electricity produced by new solar projects may not be efficiently evacuated to areas where demand exists. The renewable-energy buildout therefore needs to be viewed as an integrated infrastructure programme rather than simply a race to install additional gigawatts of solar panels.

India May Need A Recalibration Of Priorities

The central argument is not that India should stop building renewable energy. Rather, the next phase of the energy transition may require greater emphasis on the infrastructure surrounding renewable generation. That includes:
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems.
  • Transmission corridors.
  • Grid modernisation.
  • Better integration of existing renewable capacity.
  • Storage linked directly with renewable projects.
The objective should increasingly shift from simply maximising installed renewable capacity toward maximising the amount of renewable electricity that can be reliably delivered and consumed.
