A major change has been introduced in the way closing prices are discovered in Indian markets. While the objective is better price discovery, the transition period may witness unusual volatility and unexpected price swings.
What Changed?
Earlier, the closing price of a stock was generally determined using the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) during the last 30 minutes of trading, typically between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM.
The closing values of benchmark indices such as Nifty, Bank Nifty, and Sensex were derived from these closing prices.
Introduction Of Closing Session Auction (CAS)
Under the new mechanism, buy and sell orders are accumulated during a specified auction window rather than being matched continuously.
• 3:20 PM – 3:30 PM: Collection of buy and sell orders
• 3:30 PM – 3:35 PM: Order matching and price discovery
• Final closing price is determined through the auction process
The model is inspired by mechanisms used in several developed international markets and aims to improve the efficiency of closing-price discovery.
Why Are Traders Concerned?
Whenever a new market structure is introduced, sophisticated participants and institutions often adapt faster than retail traders.
During the initial phase, significant price fluctuations can occur as participants learn the dynamics of the auction process. Traders attempting to speculate during the closing auction may face unexpected outcomes.
The closing auction is increasingly becoming a specialized institutional activity where speed, capital, and execution quality matter significantly.
What To Expect In Coming Weeks?
Market participants may witness higher-than-normal closing volatility as the new process settles in. Over time, increased institutional participation is expected to improve liquidity and narrow abnormal price deviations.
As participation broadens, the auction mechanism should contribute to more efficient and transparent closing-price discovery.
For many retail traders, a disciplined approach may be to treat the effective trading day as ending around 3:15 PM and avoid speculative participation in the closing auction until the mechanism becomes better understood and more stable.
