Why Is India’s Aviation Sector Entering a Phase of Demand–Supply Rebalancing?
Sector Context
India’s aviation sector has witnessed rapid expansion over the last few years, driven by rising disposable incomes, improved regional connectivity and aggressive fleet additions by leading carriers. However, FY26 is shaping up to be a transition year, marked by demand moderation and supply-side constraints.
According to ELARA, domestic traffic growth has slowed, primarily due to a shrinking fleet among non-IndiGo carriers and operational disruptions.
Despite constrained supply, domestic airfares in Q3 FY26 remained tight, not because of excess demand but due to limited capacity. Looking ahead, Q4 FY26 airfares are expected to be lower on a year-on-year basis, owing to a high base from the Kumbh festival-led demand in Q4 FY25.
Key ELARA Observations
🔹 Domestic traffic growth slowing.
🔹 Capacity constraints persist across non-IndiGo carriers.
🔹 Q4 FY26 airfares likely to soften YoY.
🔹 Passenger load factors expected to improve.
IndiGo, the market leader, continues to dominate capacity deployment. However, ELARA has cut EBITDA estimates for IndiGo earlier due to slower ASKM growth, higher crew costs and inefficiencies caused by flight disruptions. Pilot shortages are expected to remain a temporary challenge over the next two to four quarters.
Sector-focused traders often align exposure using a Nifty Trading Signal framework during cyclical corrections in travel demand.
Airline-Wise Snapshot
| Airline | FY26 Outlook |
|---|---|
| IndiGo | EBITDA pressure, dominance intact |
| SpiceJet | EBITDA improvement, losses persist |
While profitability remains under pressure, improving load factors could offer partial relief. The medium-term trajectory will depend on fleet additions, cost control and demand elasticity.
Investor Takeaway
Derivative Pro & Nifty Expert Gulshan Khera, CFP®, believes India’s aviation sector is entering a normalisation phase after rapid expansion. Selective positioning rather than broad exposure is key as capacity, costs and demand rebalance.
