Why Has Tata Capital Received an Add Rating with Long-Term Growth Expectations?

Kotak Institutional Equities initiates Add rating on Tata Capital with growth outlook, return projections and portfolio expansion expectations.

Why Has Tata Capital Received an Add Rating with Long-Term Growth Expectations?

Kotak Institutional Equities has initiated coverage on Tata Capital with an Add rating and a target price of ₹360. The brokerage notes that the scale, portfolio diversity and improving profitability trajectory position the company for sustained growth across the next three fiscal years.

Tata Capital is currently the third-largest NBFC in the country with a loan book of approximately ₹2.44 trillion as of Q2 FY26. The lending model is diversified, with 61 percent exposure to retail products and the remaining spread across corporate segments and specialised financing verticals.

Kotak expects loan growth to accelerate at a compound rate of around 21 percent between FY25 and FY28, driven by deeper retail penetration, improved customer acquisition efficiency and an expanding branch and distribution footprint.

Market participants evaluating NBFC sentiment may assess near-term directional bias using Nifty Future Trade.

Parameter Estimates / View
Loan Book ₹2.44 trillion (Q2 FY26)
Loan Growth Outlook 21% CAGR (FY25–28E)
EPS Growth 29% CAGR (FY25–28E)
RoE Projection 12.5% → 15.7% by FY28

A key contributor to projected profitability is the turnaround of Tata Motors Finance and improved operating leverage across business segments. The brokerage highlights that consolidation benefits and operating efficiency improvements could support return stability as the balance sheet expands.

Strengths Weaknesses

🔹 Large-scale retail presence

🔹 Improved operating leverage

🔹 Margin sensitivity in rate cycles

🔹 Execution dependence on retail expansion

The medium-term thesis centres on disciplined balance sheet growth, scalability of retail lending platforms and improved operational efficiency supporting a stronger return profile.

Opportunities Threats

🔹 Retail credit expansion runway

🔹 Strategic alignment within Tata ecosystem

🔹 Competitive NBFC pricing environment

🔹 Regulatory and cost-of-funds sensitivity

Kotak’s outlook suggests a gradual improvement trend supported by distribution strength, improved capital productivity and a broader retail mix. Continued disclosures around asset quality, funding cost and expansion efficiency will be key investor watchpoints.

Sector movement may also be evaluated through BankNifty Future Trade.

Derivative Pro & Nifty Expert Gulshan Khera, CFP® notes that NBFC positioning trends often align with credit cycles, regulatory stability and liability management strength. Broader insights continue at Indian-Share-Tips.com, which is a SEBI Registered Advisory Services.
