What is India Futuristic Plan for its Naval Capabilites?

How Is India Planning To Expand Its Navy To 200 Warships And Submarines?

About Indian Navy

The Indian Navy is the maritime branch of India’s armed forces, responsible for safeguarding national interests at sea. It operates a mix of aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, frigates, and auxiliary vessels, and plays a critical role in maritime security, humanitarian missions, and strategic deterrence in the Indian Ocean Region.

Current Fleet: India currently has 140 warships, including 17 diesel-electric submarines and two nuclear-powered submarines (SSBNs), with 55 warships under construction at Indian shipyards at an estimated cost of ₹99,500 crore.
Future Expansion: Plans include increasing the Navy to 200 warships and submarines by 2035, along with 350 naval aircraft and helicopters. Indigenous construction of 74 additional warships and vessels has also been approved.
Strategic Importance: This expansion aims to secure India’s maritime interests and counter fast-expanding naval capabilities of China and Pakistan, while supporting regional presence in critical waterways and overseas bases.
Economic Impact: Warship construction has a multiplier effect on the economy, generating jobs and boosting ancillary industries, with each shipyard project creating multiple employment opportunities in related sectors.

Investor Takeaway

India’s naval expansion represents both a strategic and economic opportunity, reinforcing defense preparedness and fostering industrial growth through domestic shipbuilding and defense partnerships.
