Eighty years ago, adding chicory to coffee was considered a crime.
At that time, District Judge A.S.P. Iyer of Anantpur (then part of the Madras Presidency) was presiding over a case involving coffee powder that had been adulterated by the addition of chicory.
Legendary Madras High Court barrister Nugent Grant argued that since chicory was superior in quality and taste to coffee, it could not be considered an adulteration when added to coffee.
Justice A.S.P. Iyer responded, "Mr. Grant, in cases of 'adulteration' and 'adultery,' the argument that the substitute is better than the original is not valid."
