Dhanvantri is the Hindu god of medicine and Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine. Dhanteras is a Hindu festival celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Kartika. Dhanvantri is said to have emerged from the ocean of milk during the Samudra Manthan, also known as the churning of the ocean. He emerged holding a pot of amrita, the nectar of immortality, and the Ayurveda texts.
Dhanteras is also known as Dhanvantari Jayanti, or the birthday of Dhanvantri. On this day, Hindus worship Dhanvantri and pray for good health and longevity.
Dhanteras is a day to celebrate the birth of Dhanvantri and to worship him for good health and longevity.
Dhanteras is also the birth anniversary of Goddess Lakshmi. It is a day to buy new utensils and other metal objects, as Dhanvantri is associated with metal.
In addition, Dhanteras is a time to reflect on the importance of health and to appreciate the role of Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine in promoting good health.
The word ‘Dhanteras’ is derived from two words: ‘Dhan,’ which means wealth, and ‘Teras,’ signifying the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight. Dhanteras, is also called Dhanavantri Trayodashi and Dhanatrayodashi. Dhanteras isn’t just a festival. It is a beautiful blend of fascinating history, hope, worship and festivity.
India’s History is divided into four Yug. Satyug, Treta yug, Dwapar Yug and Kalyug. Satyug is the period when iswar, Devta, asur etc lived. In satyug there were four avatars of Bhagwan Vishnu, In Treta Yug there were Three avatars , In Dwapar yug there were Two avatars and in Kalyug there is supposed to be one called Kalki yet to take birth. This is the sequenc of Yug.
The story of Dhanteras relates to Satyug when Devtas and Asurs used to live on earth.
Once Indra – the King of Devta, while riding on an elephant came across sage Durvasa who offered him a special garland. Indra accepted the garland but put it on the trunk of the elephant. The elephant was irritated by the smell and it threw the garland on the floor. This enraged the sage as the garland was a dwelling of Sri (fortune) and was to be treated with respect. Durvasa Muni cursed Indra and all devtas to be bereft of all strength, energy, and fortune. Post this incident, devtas lost all the battles to asuras and the asuras gained control of the universe.
Devtas sought help from Bhagwan Vishnu who told them that the only way to get back their power is through consuming Amrit which lies under the ocean. The Amrit can be brought out only by Samudra manthan. Since Devtas were bereft of any power they approached the asuras to jointly churn the ocean for the Amrit of immortality. Devtas, however, already had an understanding with Bhagwan Vishnu that the Amrit will be handed over to them to get back the strength.
Mount Mandara under the ocean was used as churning rod and Vasuki, the King of Serpents, became the churning rope. Bhagwan Vishnu himself had to intercede in so many ways to aid the process. But as the pole entered the water it kept sliding into depths of the ocean. To stop this, Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and placed the mountain on his back. The tortoise was Bhagwan Vishnu’s second avatar called ‘Kurma.’ Once the pole was balanced, it was tied to the gigantic snake, Vasuki, and the Devtas and Asuras started pulling it from either side. All kinds of herbs were cast into the ocean and many creatures and objects were produced from the ocean which were then divided equally between asuras and devas.
During the Samudra Manthan, Vish, a pot of lethal poison also came out of the ocean. It was supposed to be so toxic that it could have wiped out the entire creation. To be divided equally between Devtas and Asuras which would have killed both, so Bhagwan Shiva drank the poison himself to save the earth. However, Maa Parvati Bhagwan Shiva’s wife squeezed his neck so that the poison does not get into his stomach. Thus, it stayed in his throat neither moving up nor going down and Shiva remained unharmed.
During this churning, several divine gifts emerged, including Goddess Lakshmi emerged through Samudra Manthan, sitting on a lotus, with a vessel stocked with gold, symbolizing good fortune, prosperity, happiness, and wealth.
Towards the end of the churning on thirteenth lunar day of the Krishna Paksha of the Hindu calendar of Kartik Maa Laxmi and Kubera Devta emerged from the ocean. Also god Dhanvantri ( god of medicine) appeared with the pot of Amrit and book of Ayurveda. Once the amruta was out, the demons forcefully took it away which was followed by a war between the devas and the asuras. Finally, Vishnu disguised as the enchanting Mohini (danseuse) and recovered the nectar pot and handed it over to the devtas.
That’s why Hindus celebrate emergence of Maa Laxmi, Kuber Devta and Dhanavantri the Doctor of Gods on Dhanteras. This is the story of Dhanteras in nutshell may share with your family and kids.
I hope that this day brings fresh hopes, new dreams, and pleasant moments in your life. Happy Dhanteras!
