5 vs 750 - the two sea tragedies

In the past ten days, the world's attention was captured by two tragedies at sea.

First was the shipwreck of the fishing trawler that was carrying 750 refugees in Greek waters. These refugees were desperate to reach the shores of Europe, to escape poverty or persecution, to seek survival or a better life. Whatever the reasons, these refugees paid smugglers to bring them across the sea. But the overcrowded, under-equipped boat sank. Only 104 survivors were found. 646 souls perished, many of them children.

Days later, a small submersible (the Titan), carrying 5 wealthy passengers, was trying to conquer the deep depths of the ocean to view the wreck of the Titanic for themselves in person. When communications with the submersible was lost, an immediate response and rescue effort was launched, to save the 5 souls. Multiple countries, led by multiple agencies and organisations relocated resources, manpower and experts to the rescue mission. The world media reported on every move, and highlighted the urgency needed to save those onboard. They listed their names, their rich backgrounds, and even their important connections to royalty like King Charles.

No one knew for certain who those 750 people were on the fishing trawler that went down. They were anonymous. No one knew their names, who they were, where they came from. No one cares. They were invisible to the authorities. When the boat sank, there was no immediate response, no joint effort by concerned countries or organisations to rescue them. Pope Francis lamented in his hospital bed why not much was done to save the lives of these refugees.

5 versus 750.
It is clear which lives were more important and valued. And even after these tragic deaths in the two incidents, the worth of their lives continues to be valued differently. Currently there is deep analysis into what happened to the "catastrophic implosion" of the submersible, and what needs to prevent such a tragedy in the future. There is discussion about a more stringent safety certification process and procedures.

Conversely, no analysis is taking place for why the fishing trawler sank, much less on what to prevent such incidents from occurring again. No one cares. Numerous refugee boats sank over the past decade, and countless adults and children drowned. But no one is interested to prevent this catastrophe from happening again and again.

5 versus 750.
Rich or poor.
Well connected or desperate.
The sea claim all.

Man has an unenviable tendency to place different values on different lives, based especially on human metrics of measurement of values, such as wealth, education, social standings, social connections.
