Impact of USA Economy/Inflation on World Markets

Impact of Russian Ukraine War on Geopolitical Situation

Having pushed Ukraine into war, the US does not know how to save it. Having started it, Russia does not know where to end it. Having been pushed into the war, Ukraine does not know how to come out of it. It accuses its adversary Russia saying it is an invader and charges that its friends are betrayers. The UN Security Council keeps on meeting without any result. The global TV network for which the war is a reality show, a boon, keeps demonising Russia and valourising Ukraine. What the desperate Ukraine needs is a ceasefire. It is running from pillar to post — from India to Turkey to France, to Israel, to Japan — pleading with them to talk to Putin for a ceasefire. Everyone is talking to everyone else.

But Biden is not talking to Putin and Putin is not talking to Zelenskyy. This is the sad state of the efforts to stop the war. Poor Zelenskyy. What he is now saying to end the war — that we will not apply to join NATO, we will remain neutral — had he said that before, the war would not have started. Russia has staked everything – its goodwill, its economy and its last atom bomb – like a jihadi, making the West shudder to think of taking it head on. But the war is bound to end. When is the only question. When it does end, Russia would have got all that it wanted and Ukraine would have given all that it had denied. And the West would have realised and the world would have known how needless the war was. But, what kind of world will the pointless war leave behind?

A world of distrust

The worst outcome of the Ukraine war is that it has shown that anything and everything can be politicised and weaponised — from financial transaction systems like SWIFT, to banks, private companies like Google to civilian airspace. SWIFT is a high security neutral financial network created by an NGO and used by 11,000 financial institutions in 200 countries. By jamming this critical network, the Ukraine war has destroyed the most basic of mutual trust among nations. Take India. The share of Google in Indian email accounts is 62 per cent. Were India to fall foul of the West, the entire country can be brought to a halt by Google. Each nation or group of nations will now look for alternatives.

Another message is that even Switzerland, which remained neutral in the two world wars, can't remain neutral in a West vs others scenario. A telling message of the Ukraine war is that no country can trust even the global commons. It leaves behind a world of distrust. It will increasingly force each nation to be on its own — atmanirbhar being the Indian idiom for it, the very antithesis of globalisation. An alternative to SWIFT is already underway with some 63 central banks collaborating on a new payments system.

US leadership dented

The Ukraine war seems to have dented the US global leadership in more than one sense. First, it has delivered the most telling message that the US can't protect its own protégé. Next, that it had to solicit a virtual meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping (XJP) to get China to the US side or to end the war itself, exposed its weakness. Donald Trump would perhaps have handled Russia and Ukraine differently, not allowed China to be the proverbial monkey between two tigers, the US and Russia.

Anyway the two-hour talk Biden had with XJP did not go well for him. XJP reportedly snubbed Biden saying "those who tied the bell to the tiger must untie it," clearly blaming NATO for the war. XJP used the talk to advance China's claim to be equal to the US, saying they should jointly shoulder "international responsibilities" for world peace and tranquility. According to a Chinese report, XJP seems to have said that one hand cannot clap, suggesting that NATO should have a dialogue with Putin and address his security concerns, implying NATO expansion as the issue. XJP, of course, has also spoken in support of the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states. He seems to have insisted on bringing the China-US ties under turmoil over a host of issues, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet, on "right track" — something completely beyond the agenda of Biden on that day.

The US media had reported that Biden threatened XJP. On the contrary, he seems to have got snubbed. Biden's effort to wean China away from Russia has failed at the minimum. If this is what the US got from China, The Wall Street Journal reported that Saudi Arabia and the UAE declined calls from Biden to ease oil prices unless the US supported them in Yemen and elsewhere. Arab allies of the US have refused to toe its line. Israel did criticise the Russian attack but its stand was so nuanced as not to take the side of the West. Turkey's position is identical to Israel's.

Al-Jazeera even sees a strong alliance between Russia and UAE. Another collateral setback to the US is Syrian president Assad's visit (after 11 years) to UAE about which the US could only lament that it was "disappointed and troubled". Syria and Russia are close. On top of it all, Saudi Arabia, whose oil has been priced in US dollars for five decades, is considering pricing it in Yuan for sales to China. One more important development. The Chinese foreign minister was invited for the first time to the meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. These are not ordinary developments. The Ukraine war has undoubtedly eroded US influence over even its allies.

China's Taiwan angle

China seems to have gained far more than it has invested in Ukraine. By subtly encouraging the US vs Russia scenario in Ukraine, China had ensured that the focus of the Biden regime was more on Russia and Ukraine and less on containing China. Being surreptitiously privy to and supporting Russia on Ukraine action, Beijing has gained an IOU from Russia if in future it has to move on Taiwan. XJP's firm and equal dealing with Biden has dented the US capacity to confront China on Taiwan. If Biden had secretly conceded more to XJP on Taiwan as some reports say, China would have hit a jackpot.

Despite that, if the US had drawn a blank with XJP, it would have been a disaster for Biden. China's Ukraine strategy seems intended to advance its efforts to grab Taiwan – its greatest ambition and top most priority of XJP. The Ukraine war has exposed the limitations of the US and the West to step in to save its non-formal ally. The Taiwan Relations Act only ensures defence supplies by the US to Taiwan and nothing further. In comparison to Ukraine, which the US recognises as an independent nation, Taiwan's status is much inferior. If China makes a decisive move against Taiwan, the US could do very little given its show in Ukraine — to say nothing of the Afghanistan debacle.

*India's growing stature*

Despite being part of Quad and with deep strategic partnership with the US, India's neutrality, with an implicit pro-Russian tilt, was a calculated geopolitical risk India took at the very start of the Ukraine war. Subsequent developments not only won understanding but also acclaim for it. A displeased America had to concede India was an exception among its allies. Surprisingly, amid the raging Ukraine war New Delhi became the centre of hyper diplomatic activity. Scott Morrison, the Prime Minister of Australia, a Quad constituent, had a virtual meeting with the Indian Prime Minister, promised investments and said that the Quad nations understood India on Ukraine. Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, another Quad member, paid his first official visit abroad to India. And keeping aside the differences between the two on Ukraine, he signed six strategic agreements and committed to investing $42 billion in the next five years. The Greek foreign minister was in Delhi on March 22 and 23 and the Oman foreign affairs minister was in Delhi for two full days, March 23 and 24.

China and India have had border clashes for the last two years. Surprisingly, its foreign minister Wang Yi visited Delhi on March 25 — a significant development. India's independent position on Ukraine is itself a message to China that India would withstand US pressure. If it can lead to some trust and understanding between China and India on the borders, that can pave the way for an informal Russia-China-India axis for future. Naftali Bennett, the Prime Minister of Israel, a US ally, is making a four-day long visit to India in April first week at the invitation of "his friend" Indian Prime Minister Modi. India is boldly going ahead with the purchase of Russian oil amid US sanctions on Russia.

Though India has not voted for Russia, it has taken a firm position on the discovery of a bio-weapon facility in Ukraine funded by America. And America, despite loosely calling India shaky on the Ukraine war, has not applied the CAATSA law to stop the sale of Russia's missile system to India. Undoubtedly, the Ukraine war diplomacy has shown India's rising stature. The greatest tribute to India's policies came from the most unlikely of quarters, Pakistan. Praising India's foreign policy as free and independent, Prime Minister Imran Khan said, "India is allied with America and is part of the Quad alliance and yet it is neutral on Ukraine, imports oil from Russia despite US sanctions, because its policy is oriented to the betterment of its own people."

Shift away from the dollar?

The war's collateral impact may be on the US dollar and the global financial order itself. With the dollar-based globalisation already under stress, the role of the greenback in the global financial system may decline. The dollar power enabled dominance of the financial economy over the real economy, particularly the commodity economy. The US sanctions which are bound to affect the Russian oil sale, may also affect the US dollar.

The strength of the US dollar depended, said two Harvard economists in 2006, not on the laws of economics but on the laws of physics, which said a dark matter sustains the universe. The dark matter which sustains the dollar value, they said, is the insurance that the US system and geopolitical power provides to the dollar. That insurance is what is under stress since 2008. With the rise of Asia and China, the US dollar cannot be said to continue to have the same insurance value. The share of USD in the global forex reserves has touched a 25-year low of about 59 per cent.

If important nations shift to their own fiat currency based trade like the Rupee-Ruble arrangement between India and Russia and if an alternative to SWIFT can be found, the move away from dollar can accelerate. For instance, if India and China begin paying for their trade in their fiat currencies rated to the US dollar and at the year-end pay the net in terms of the dollar, the overall demand for the dollar will contract rapidly. It is the demand for the dollar that sustains its value. These kinds of developments post the Ukraine war can have a far reaching impact.

To end, in just weeks the needless Ukraine eruption has disrupted the world as if forever. Thanks to it, the post-cold war world already stands on its head — disrupting old relations, making new ones, undermining existing power centres, creating new, multiple influence centres. Its impact will keep unfolding for a long time.

Stranger than Fiction :A story like no other

When the Old and New Cities of Jerusalem were reunited in 1967, a recently widowed Arab woman, who had been living in Old Jerusalem since 1948, wanted to see once more the house in which she formerly lived. Now that the city was one, she searched for and found her old home.

She knocked on the door of the apartment, and a Jewish widow came to the door and greeted her. The Arab woman explained that she had lived there until 1948 and wanted to look around. She was invited in and offered coffee. The Arab woman said, "When I lived here, I hid some valuables. If they are still here, I will share them with you half and half."

The Jewish woman refused. "If they belonged to you and are still here, they are yours." After much discussion back and forth, they entered the bathroom, loosened the floor planks, and found a hoard of gold coins. The Jewish woman said, "I shall ask the government to let you keep them." She did and permission was granted.

The two widows visited each other again and again, and one day the Arab woman told her, "You know, in the 1948 fighting here, my husband and I were so frightened that we ran away to escape. We grabbed our belongings, took the children, and each fled separately. We had a three-month-old son. I thought my husband had taken him, and he thought I had. Imagine our grief when we were reunited in Old Jerusalem to find that neither of us had taken the child."

The Jewish woman turned pale and asked the exact date. The Arab woman named the date and the hour, and the Jewish widow told her: "My husband was one of the Israeli troops that entered Jerusalem. He came into this house and found a baby on the floor. He asked if he could keep the house and the baby, too.

Permission was granted."

At that moment, a twenty-year-old Israeli soldier in uniform walked into the room, and the Jewish woman broke down in tears. "This is your son," she cried.

This is one of those incredible tales we hear. And the aftermath? The two women liked each other so much that the Jewish widow asked the Arab mother: "Look, we are both widows living alone. Our children are grown up. This house has brought you luck. You have found your son, or our son. Why don't we live together?"

And they do.

HDFC – HDFC Bank Merger – Impications

1. HDFC at its board meeting held on April 04, 2022, approved a composite scheme of amalgamation.

2. The merger between the two entities will be a 2-step process. In the first step: HDFC Investments Ltd. and HDFC Holdings Ltd., wholly-owned subsidiaries of HDFC Ltd., will be merged with and into HDFC Ltd and In Step 2: HDFC Ltd. will be merged with and into HDFC Bank.

3. As per the filing with stock exchanges, the share exchange ratio for the amalgamation is for 25shares of HDFC Ltd; the shareholders will get 42 shares of HDFC Bank. Shareholders having lesser HDFC Ltd shares, the amount will be credited back to them. HDFC will hold 41 percent of the stakes of HDFC Bank.

4. According to the transaction structure, India’s largest housing finance company HDFC Ltd with Assets under Management (AUM) of Rs. 5.26 trillion and a market cap worth Rs. 4.44 trillion will merge with HDFC Bank, which is India’s largest private sector bank as per assets with a market cap of Rs. 8.35 trillion. The market value of the merged entity will be Rs 12.8 lakh crore based on the market capitalization of the two entities as of 1 April 2022.

5. HDFC Bank and HDFC merger will create a financial sector behemoth with more than Rs 25 lakh crore in assets.

6. As per filling, Completion of Merger Process is Expected by Q2 / Q3 of FY24

7. The combined business would benefit from increased scale, comprehensive product offering, and balance sheet resiliency.

8. HDFC is a leader in housing finance, while HDFC Bank has a much larger scale and distribution. The merger will enable the group to leverage these synergies.

9. As per the proposed Scheme, on the Effective Date, all outstanding liabilities, contingent liabilities, debts, and loans (outstanding liabilities) of the Corporation shall be transferred to HDFC Bank on the same terms and conditions as were applicable to the Corporation. Accordingly, HDFC Bank shall meet, discharge, and satisfy its duties and obligations pertaining to the transfer and vesting of all outstanding liabilities of the Corporation on the Effective Date and it shall not be necessary to obtain any further consent.

There is simply not even 10% Surplus that US has to sell to EU.

Every Gas producer has its own Clients and Contracts.

EU is stuck with Russia.

Experts say - the price for 90 days consumption of LNG compared to Piped Gas would be roughly $ 540 Billion against $ 86 Billion. For a year thats $ 2.25 Trillion against $ 365 Billion.

Imagine paying 600% more for your gas! It will make European industries uncompetitive and civil unrest when the consumers realised how much their pocket is affected and how stupid is their government.

Its simply impossible for EU to survive beyond 100 Days of bravado, stupidity and lack of wisdom.

Meanwhile Putin could lose $ 100 Billion Revenues by stopping Gas Production but he can bring Europe down to its knees

The really important Russian war with the West is the financial war, which the western media never discusses.

Here are the developments:

Russia has told the EU nations that from April 1, it will only accept rubles for Russian natural gas;

The EU has said that they refuse to pay rubles, and that they will only pay in US$ and euros;

The Russians have said that they will not accept US$ and euros, because they could sanction Russia any time, in which case the US$ and euros Russia holds are worthless.

The US and UK have signed regulations not allowing Russian gold to be sold in US, UK gold exchanges.

Now, the last part is very interesting, because Shanghai has its gold exchange. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Putin has planned ingeniously well and announced that the Bank of Russia will buy gold. The gold can then be converted into rubles, which can then be used to buy natural gas. This caught the West by surprise. Now I see why Russia and China have been accumulating gold for years.

The German government is in a very bad spot because its economy depends on Russian natural gas. If they break with the US, the US will be annoyed. If they obey the US, the German economy, which is a major global economy, will slide into a major recession.

What happens if Russia announces that it will also accept Indian rupees and Chinese yuan in payment for natural gas? Just no US$ and euros. Would the Europeans scramble to buy rupees and yuan? What happens if the Chinese say they don't want US$ because the Chinese believe that the Americans are going to sanction China next?

That would be very interesting.

A Simple Solution for a grave Problem in Business

A big factory was being built in Kerala and a grave problem arose during the construction of that plant. The problem was that a really heavy machine had to be placed at the bottom of a deep pit built in the plant, but the weight of the machine posed a challenge.

The machine arrived at the site but how to get it down in the 30 feet deep pit, had become a big problem!!

If not installed properly, both the foundation and the machine would suffer a lot.

Now, this was a time when cranes that could lift very heavy weights were not available everywhere. The ones available could probably lift the machine, but to land it in the deep pit was beyond their capacity.

Finally, the company constructing the plant gave up, and issued a tender to find a solution to this problem. As a result, a lot of people sent their offers to fit this machine in the pit. They thought that they would call for a crane and get the machine installed.

Accordingly, they asked for 10 to 15 lakh rupees to complete the work. But there was a gentleman among those people, who asked the company, "if the machine gets drenched in water, will there be any problem?"

The company replied that "it will not make any difference to the machine."

After that, he also filled the tender.

When all the offers were seen, that person had asked for only 5 lakh rupees for completing the work. So obviously, the job of setting up the machine was given to him.

But the strange thing was that this person refused to share how he would do this work, and only said that he had the skills and the right team to do it.

He just asked the company to tell him the date and time on which to do this work.

The day finally came. Every employee, manager, even the boss of the company and everyone around was very curious to know how that man would do this work! He had not even done any preparation on the site.

Well, on the decided time, a lot of trucks started reaching that site. All those trucks were loaded with ice slabs, and they were all being filled into the pit.

When the pit was completely filled with ice, they moved the machine and placed it atop the ice slabs. After this, a portable water pump was switched on and a pipe was inserted in the pit so that the water could be taken out. The ice melted, the water kept pouring out, and the machine started going down.

The work was completed within 4-5 hours and the total cost came to less than Rs.1 lakh.

The machine fit perfectly and the man made a profit of more than Rs.4 lakhs.

Business is actually a very interesting subject. *Finding a simple solution to the problem is an art, which depends on the person's prudence, cleverness and practical understanding.

He'd gone to his bank to withdraw cash but arrived a minute after closing time one day in the mid-1960s, leaving him with no funds for the weekend.

"Wouldn't it be a good idea if there was some way of obtaining money outside regular working hours?" he mused.

Vending machines, which allowed him to buy chocolate at any time of day or night, sprang to his mind.

Thus, Shepherd-Barron who worked for a printing company, devised a system for automatically dispensing cash.

Later that year, he bumped into the Chief General Manager of Barclays Bank who was about to have lunch. Over a pink gin, Shepherd-Barron asked him for 90 seconds to pitch his idea for a cash machine.

"I told him I had an idea that if you put your standard Barclays cheque through a slot in the side of the bank, it will deliver standard amounts of money around the clock".

"He said, 'Come and see me on Monday morning'."

Barclays commissioned Shepherd-Barron to build six cash dispensers, the first of which was installed at a branch in the north London suburb of Enfield on June 27 , 1967.

Shepherd -Barron was born in Shillong, India in 1925 and later served in the Indian Army in Second Airborne division where he taught Gurkhas to parachute.

He also invented the PIN by recalling his Indian Army number, he had originally intended to make personal identification numbers (PINs) six digit long, but reduced the number to four when his wife, Caroline, complained that six was too many.

"Over the kitchen table, she said she could only remember four figures, so because of her, four figures became the world standard," he recalled.

And this was possible due to the work of Srinivasa Ramanujan, mathematical genius of India.

Unconventional Genius, mathematician Srinivasa Ramunujam had no formal training in mathematics and would not get further education in Madras university and his English boss at Madras Port trust encouraged him to write to Prof Hardy of Trinity College Cambridge. He wrote a big letter with his equations which held Hardy's interest and he secured him an admission without necessary prerequisites or hard Tripos Exam. He would have not made it to Cambridge and world fame if rules were not broken for him and at Trinity college he came up with partition theory.

When you put your debit or credit card in the machine and order the machine to dispense the amount you desire - the machine divides and arranges your money before dispensing it, using Ramanujan's partition theory, which is as:

In number theory, a partition of a positive integer n, also called an integer partition, is a way of writing n as a sum of positive integers. Two sums that differ only in the order of their summands are considered the same partition. For example, 4 can be partitioned in five distinct ways:

3 + 1

2 + 2

2 + 1 + 1

1 + 1 + 1 + 1

The ATM machine arranges the correct money to be dispensed according to Ramanujan's Partition theory.

That's the genius of two fine Gentlemen (who never met and never bothered to patent their ideas) at play when you get cash in an ATM. Now, when you visit an ATM, just think of these two geniuses- one who got the idea and the other who gave how to work it before the idea of ATM sprang.

Well done Acacia! Nature had a response - The Giraffes!

Having a long neck and no competition to graze at a height, Acacia trees became prime feeding options for the Giraffes. Over east and central Africa , Giraffes boomed at the expense of Acacias!

Acacias made their next move!!Evolutionary biologists have studied that they evolved to have sharp thorns in them next. Sharp thorns along the branches to avoid Giraffes from plundering them!! (Also getting their name from 'Akis' meaning thorns in Greek)

Giraffes had to make their next move. So they did. They developed almost 45cms long tongues which are prehensile and can easily manoeuver the thorns and pick the leaves out. Coupled with tough lips , the Giraffes out thought the Acacias!! 🦒 1-1🌳

Evolution doesn't stop!! Neither do Acacias!

Next, the trees started releasing a Tannin as soon as it saw a Giraffe feeding from them. Tannins taste awful and stop digestion! Within minutes of a 🦒 attack , the tannins were released !!

What more! The Acacias went another step ahead and started passing the Tannin info via wind to trees nearby! So as soon as a giraffe arrived, all the trees in the area started releasing Tannin giving a preemptive attack on the Giraffe!!!! 🌳 2-1 🦒

Nature never leaves anyone! So it gave Giraffes the next evolutionary step. Knowing that the tree starts secreting tannin within 10 mins@and passes downwind, the 🦒 started grazing only for few minutes on a tree & started moving upwind as trees there won't have Tannin!!! 🤯🦒2-2🌳

One can't just not admire such beauty of nature where it provides for everyone! And how evolution works in various ways!

It's next move for Acacia trees! We will soon know in a few decades perhaps!
