Last year around this time we had a unique banking challenge onboard, with over 1500+ personnel, the daily sales in canteen and cafeteria at high seas touched an all time high and on the other side, the ships company was running short of money having expended physical cash over two plus months at sea.
We had a large collection of physical cash in smallest possible
denominations increasing everyday and on other side the embarked personnel
were heading to almost empty pockets, leading to various adminstrative
challenges..add to this, our COVID protocols and restrictions on afloat
personnel to step ashore and bank officials to step onboard to repair or
refill ATM... Even if they did, the ATM onboard remains non ops at sea.
To address these challenges, the ships logistics team, worked over 8-9
months and developed an absolutely made in India solution for digitising
financial transactions onboard, particularly the point of sales (POS
onboard), like barber, dhobi, tailor, canteen, cafeteria, sailors mess,
wardroom etc...
The concept is very unique and the business process is a result of step by
step, relentless problem solving using various available technologies.
The product has an architecture of a Food court model boosted by canteen
card data mgmt technology, held together with inflight commerce system,
under an umbrella of escrow account operated by bank, transmitting
transaction data from ship to bank servers using ATM SIM modem system and
finally the concept in the form of a software integrated into a dual chip
card to facilitate operations in both online and offline mode..
Sounds complicated? Yes it is.
To put it simply, this is the first card in India which would work in
offline mode ie, where there is no network, like at high seas, onboard
warships even at harbour irrespective of decks and sections without
internet, oil rigs, remote stations etc, in a pre-established network
system and even work like a regular debit card or prepaid cash card in all
POS machines anywhere in the country...
The architecture would also facilitate all of us to recharge the cards as
required while in network through payment gateways and then use it Onboard
for all payments... Even a family member or a friend would be able to
recharge your card from ashore and the recharge amount would reflect in
your card on syncing with the server onboard once in network.
The concept and business process was taken over by SBI few months back and
turned to reality, post troubleshooting various scenarios onboard.
The SBI NAV-eCash Card launched on 01 Oct 21 is a perfect example of a
successful demonetisation drive and INs efforts towards a digital India and
