The way India handled the Pfizer pressure is remarkable and would soon hopefully be the subject of a B-School case study. When India was short of vaccines, Pfizer unleashed a campaign that millions of Indians will be impacted if Pfizer vaccines are not imported on Pfizer terms (which included a ridiculous indemnity clause that even the US government refused to sign).
Had India declined or fought Pfizer, the GOI would have been made to fall.
The narrative would have been: This is a heartless administration. There is a shortage of vaccines. India should therefore accept all of Pfizer's conditions. It should sign on the dotted line and pay the price Pfizer is demanding.
However, the Indian administration had an ace up their sleeves. We knew that after July the vaccine supply would increase and our delivery mechanism in states will simultaneously be ramped up.
We did not say NO, we did not leave the negotiating table and the official stand was: we are in discussion with Pfizer.
Come September, the situation has changed. To the dismay of the anti-Modi pundits, India has ramped up its "production and procurement" and was already administering 10 million doses a day, which is now poised to scale up even further.
With every passing day, Pfizer and Moderna are losing leverage. Israel has exposed the chinks in the armor of these two vaccines. They are not, as claimed earlier, infinitely superior to either Covaxine or Covishield. Furthermore Japan has thrown in a spanner for Moderna.
In India, new vaccines are in the pipeline and around next week we will administer twice the number of doses of the US. Our total population is 4X of US but our adult population differential is less. India under 18 population is 40% of the total, US is 24% and Japan 16%.
In vaccine for kids, the Cadila (ZyCov-D) offering will be a game-changer.
A similar situation forced Argentine government to sign this kind of deal where any litigation against Pfizer anywhere in the country in future would be fought by the government at their own expenses on behalf of Pfizer.
Moreover, there is also clause that Pfizer can take over all the military installations of Argentina if there is some default in some clause.
Just imagine!
