Hi, just sharing this forward so that we all can learn the requisite lessons.
Today is 28 Apr 21, Sitting outside ICU, I am writing this first hand account as my younger bother is battling Covid n struggling for his life on the ventilator at a Jaipur hospital.
He had his first symptoms around 6-7 Apr, got Covid test on 9th, came negative, kept on getting high fever, cough etc, kept isolated at home, kept consulting Doctors, met Doctor personally on 13th, was given injections for mild pneumonia etc. 14th night had breathing trouble and thats when on 15th morning the same Dr advised him to get admitted in a hospital. On admission in the hospital he was put on Oxygen, HR CT Score was 18, condition kept on worsening, was put on CPA and now for last over 36 hours he is on ventilator. He has been given all required medicines incl plasma, Remdesivir etc etc...it has been a nightmarish experience for us to arrange everything. God has been kind and family n friends hv been extra supportive.
I am writing all this to share few lessons so that at least others donot repeat some of these cardinal mistakes and we can help save others....
Lesson 1. Threat is for real and can put your life at risk and that of others. Hence, we need to follow Covid protocol in toto and insist on others to also comply.
Lesson 2. in case you continue to hv symptoms, don't believe RTPCR report if its negative, Almost, 20-30 % Covid cases will not get picked up by RTPCR process. My brother had RTPCR done on 9th, came negative, became a bit complacent.
Lesson 3 : Don't self medicate, must consult a Dr soonest, consult someone who is dealing with covid cases, with hands on experience, others may not be clued up enough. Stakes are very high. My brother did consult a Covid expert, met him on 13th but he advised him wrongly, unfortunately. Dr did not check Oxygen levels, did not advise immediate admission etc.
Lesson 4. Keep an Oximeter at home, check Oxygen saturation levels as per teachings in case you feeling low or hv symptoms. Must consult Doctor if levels seen below 94. Must check twice daily.
Lesson 5. Remain well hydrated and eat well. Body must be in good condition to withstand viral attack.
Lesson 6. Getting steroids in the early phase of Covid attack is of essence. Hence early admission in hospital n expert care is very very important, do not delay.
Lesson 7. If RTPCR is negative n symptoms continue, a CT scan really helps to know presence of the infection and its level of spread in the lungs, if any. Do not delay HRCT.
Lesson 8. Staying positive, both by the attendants and the patient is equally important.
Lesson 9. When asking for plasma and oxygen etc you will be overloaded with information n contacts, Forwards by friends n relatives. 99.99999 % of these will be of no use, you would spend couple of hours to sift the inputs for that 0.0001 genuine one...so do not waste time till someone can do the homework n provide you with useful, authentic leads. Lots of fake medicines also being black-marketed.
Lesson 10. People hv good intentions to help you but can only at best share such forwards, they hv their hands full with their own challenges, very rarely will someone genuinely make efforts to help you in crisis. So identify those rare variety and seek help. Also we shoud avoid giving calls to the patient and his nodal attendant just to check patient condition. Call only if you hv done definite help to offer. Its difficult to cope with avoidable calls and urgent coordination. At best drop a msg but donot expect a reply.
Lesson 11: Stay safe and venture only if required as life saving injections are not available in market and black marketing of Remdesivir is in full swing. So, don't reach that situation where family members are to beg and still they don't get this injection even in black market.
