As a young boy, I used to accompany my mother during her visits to temples
located far off from my village. Many of them were located on the banks of
rivers and rivulets.
One aspect that got etched in my mind was her telling me that there's always a temple at those places where the rivers bend and take an opposite course to the NATURAL flow.
In the Indian peninsula, almost all the rivers except a few like the Narmada river flow down either east or north. It's because there is a gradual slope towards the east and the north.
So whenever a river bends due to local terrain configuration it goes against the overall slope. It's here temples are located.

How does this affect our day to day life?
A farmer friend of mine took me to his 30 acre farm and with a lot of concern he was explaining that he wasn't getting good returns inspite of a lot of effort.
When I checked up, his farm had a steep slope towards the south with a well at the end.
A keen observation of other farms sloping down towards the south had similar consequences.
On the contrary the farms sloping down towards north gave a lot of prosperity.
