In the District Court of Anantapur, a case on food adulteration was being heard by the then-District Judge, A.S.P. Iyer.
The case was that coffee powder was adulterated by adding chicory.
The defence counsel, Barrister Nugent Grant argued, that chicory being superior to coffee in quality & taste, it cannot be said that coffee was "adulterated" with chicory.
Justice A.S.P Iyer countered: "Mr. Grant, in cases of 'adulteration' & 'adultery', the plea that the substitute is better than the original, is not valid.''
