Shiva is a doctrine, a philosophy, an idea... not a form.
The formlessness that has the freedom to take any and every form, Shiva is dynamism, activity, the realization that helps us to overcome "darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. He is an example that shouts out saying understanding, adjustment, co-operation, and integration are the solution to life.
This is the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. The night of awakening!
The Amavasya or new moon night and its complete darkness are symbolic of the burning, passionate, emotional, sentimental, fully desire-laden mind slowly becoming withdrawn, annihilated.
That which separates you from God is your mind. When the mind is withdrawn, Consciousness remains... the awareness that You are God or God is in you... an opportunity for one to dissolve their limitedness and experience the unboundedness of the source of creation which is the seed in every human being.
The recognition, the understanding of the life and vitality within, the celebration of that awareness is Shivaratri.
Become aware, spread, share and celebrate that awareness... the awareness of God within and everywhere.
