Bat of God : An Analysis

It's not 'the number of boundaries' rule that deprived New Zealand of the World Cup.

Yes, it's weird, illogical, irrational rule. But an equally irrational rule regarding overthrows that actually did the trick.

In the 49th over. Guptill fields the ball, throws back to the wicketkeeper. Unfortunately, the ball hits the bat of a diving Ben Stokes, changes direction, goes through two fielders & crosses the boundary.

England gets 6 runs instead of 2. With these 4 bonus runs, England is able to 'tie' the match. Actually, when a fielded ball hits either the batsmen or the stumps, it should become a 'dead' ball & no runs should be allowed after that. It's unfair, illogical, irrational. Had such a rule existed, there is enough scope to the day that the match wouldn't have gone into 'super over'; most probably, NZ would have won it.

As if this 'overthrow' rule is not stupid enough, ICC made a mockery of sporting, fighting spirit, by way of 'more boundaries' rule!

By the way, it was the 'hand of God' goal by Maradona against England in 1986 Football World Cup which ruled them out of the tournament. Yesterday, there was some redemption for England because of 'bat of god' as they got 4 bonus runs & eventually, the Cup. Life has evened out, English fans need
not seek an apology from Argentina. Else, they will have to apologise to the New Zealanders for 'bat of god'.

In any case, ICC must relook at some illogical, irrational rules to ensure fair play and to keep the sporting spirit alive.
