Tata Sponge Iron (TATASPONGE) is a manufacturer of sponge iron using the TISCO direct reduction process indigenously developed by its promoter, Tata Steel. It was incorporated on Jul. 31, 1982 and got its current name on Sept. 24, 1996. The ISO-9002 certified company has its plant in Orissa with an installed capacity of 390,000 TPA of sponge iron from three kilns. The company has a power generation capacity of 26 MW from its two power plants. A coal field has been allocated to the company in Talcher coalfields, Orissa, and would contribute to the company`s coal needs by 2009-2010. The company received the Greentech Environment Excellence Gold Award in the Metal Sector for the year 2005 in August 2007. It also received the Certificate of Appreciation by Teri Research Institute (TERI) in recognition of company`s noteworthy performance towards corporate social responsibility.
