Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), established on Oct. 02, 1961, is a Government of India enterprise with substantial interest in different segments of the shipping trade. It was formed by amalgamating Eastern Shipping Corporation and Western Shipping Corporation. The ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified company has a significant presence on the global maritime map and is the country`s premier shipping line. It operates in practically all areas of the shipping business servicing both national and international trades including break-bulk service, international container service, liquid and dry bulk service, offshore service, and passenger service, in addition to manning and managing a large number of vessels on behalf of various government departments and organizations. As on Mar. 31, 2008, it had a fleet of 79 ships including 30 crude oil tankers, 9 product tankers, 3 chemical tankers, 2 gas tankers, 20 bulk carriers, 3 liner ships, 10 offshore supply vessels, and 2 passenger-cum-cargo vessels. Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, conferred the very coveted Navratna status on the company in August 2008. The company has successfully implemented an integrated management system on board 44 tankers in FY08 encompassing quality, environment, and safety management systems. Several joint ventures are in place including Irano-Hind Shipping Company, a joint venture company, in Iran. Two joint ventures were formed at Malta, namely, India LNG Transport Co. No.1 and India LNG Transport Co. No.2 for the construction, ownership and operation of two LNG tankers. India LNG Transport Company No. 3 was set up to service the Dahej Expansion Project. SCI Forbes, is a joint venture with Forbes Gokak and Sterling Investment for owning and operating chemical tankers. A capital investment of Rs 405 million has been made to enable equity participation in Sethusamudram Corporation, a Government of India special purpose vehicle established for the Sethusamudram ship canal project.
