Coal India was incorporated in 1973 as Coal Mines Authority pursuant to the nationalisation of coal mines. It underwent a corporate reorganisation wherein Bharat Coking Coal, Central Coalfield, Coal Mines Planning and Development Institute, Eastern Coalfields and Western Coalfield became its subsidiaries. Post the reorganisation, it was freshly incorporated in 1975 and the name was changed to Coal India. In 1985, National Coalfields and South Eastern Coalfields were made subsidiaries. It was conferred `Navratna` status by the Government of India in October 2008, which provides it with certain operational and financial autonomy. Additionally, its six wholly-owned subsidiaries out of nine have been accorded `mini-Navratna` status leading to decentralisation of operations and decision making. It is the largest coal producer in the country with a market share of 81% in domestic coal production. Around 90% of coal is produced from open cast mines and the balance from underground mines.
