How to Open NRI Trading Account in India?

As we have stated that NRIs can freely trade in India and for that they need to have NRI demat account and a trading account.  NRI investors can open a trading account with a registered broker of a stock exchange. NRIs can have two separate trading accounts linked to NRE & NRO accounts.

Special considerations in case of NRI trading accounts are as following:

  • NRIs cannot trade in securities which are in the RBI ban list
  • Clear funds should be available for purchases
  • Securities should be available before making a sell order
  • Depending upon whether the purchases are made on repatriation / non-repatriation basis pay-out of the securities is transferred to the respective demat account.
  • Purchase/Sale transactions in cash segment are settled by delivery only
Thus NRIs can without any hassle trade in India; provided they fulfil the guidelines given by RBI and it is better to go by the system to avoid any complication at a later stage.
