Extension Trading Hours NSE BSE | A Bane or Boon

Well year 2010 is coming with a bang as with effect from 4th January, Monday, 2010, trading in the Equity and Derivatives segments of both the exchanges (BSE & NSE) will commence from 9.00 A.M. instead of the present timing of 9.55 A.M.

Please note that the market closing time shall remain the same. Please also note that there will be no change in timings of any other session in both the exchanges.

Consequently, the Trading Session in both segments (Equity and Derivatives) will be from 9.00 A.M to 3.30 P.M. on all business days.

We personally do not like the extension in trading times and these are some of the problems with autonomous exchanges. May God grant them some grey cells which they will use to make sure that they do not add to mental anguish of traders.

We wish a Happy New Year to whole trading fraternity and their families and wish that they make money throughout complete year and are able to achieve financial freedom.

How Ketan Parekh Helped Indian Stock Market?

Wikipedia describes Ketan Parekh as a former stock broker from Mumbai, India, who was convicted in 2008, for involvement in the Indian stock market manipulation scam in late 1999-2001. Currently he has been debarred from trading in the Indian stock exchanges till 2017.

Ketan Parekh is alleged to have been involved in one of India’s biggest stock market scams that took place between 1999 and 2001. He was arrested in March 2001 and is currently barred from trading till 2017. Ketan Parekh was alleged to have been involved in circular trading – fraudulent trading scheme where buy/sell orders are entered by a person or by persons acting in collusion with each other to operate the price of the underlying security for mutual benefit.

Unlike Harshad Mehta, Ketan Parekh did not purely use public money but instead promoters of these companies themselves provided him capital to raise the price of their company’s stock. Also, Ketan Parekh used his contacts at Global Trust Bank and Madhavpura Mercantile Co-operative Bank to access funds for market manipulation.

He was involved in driving the prices of 10 stocks. These included- (i) Global Telesystems, (ii) Zee Telefilms, (iii) HFCL, (iv) Silverline, (v) Satyam Computers, (vi) Aftek Infosys, (vii) DSQ Software, (viii) Ranbaxy, (ix) Pentamedia Graphics and (x) Visual Soft.

His modus operandi: Circular trading with Promoters funds – Promoters of companies of which stock prices were relatively low – eventually dumping the stock once the broader market jumps in and the stock price rises.

NSE BSE Timings change
This is an important announcement as NSE BSE Timings change wef 18 Dec 2009 and now both exchanges commene its timings From 0900 to 1530 hrs. NSE circular states that members are requested to note the following change in the market timings:Normal Market / Retail Debt Market / Limited Physical Market Open: 9:00 a.m. Accordingly, the Block Trade session shall be available from 9:00 am to 9:35 am. Normal Market / Retail Debt Market / Limited Physical Market close time shall remain unchanged i.e. 3:30 pm. Personally brokers are not liking the idea and these are the problems with organisations without direct control of govt as they try to outsmart each other and same happened with BSE and NSE.

Update: This decision has been pended by both BSE and NSE till 04 Jan 2010 due to stiff opposition. Thank God an hour of sleep is saved and ofcourse they have to upgrade their system of accepting the funds as RTGS functions only wef 9:45 AM which means that HNI can deposit funds for bulk transaction only after the said time frame. Nonetheless it is a huge relief and NSE and BSE should not not take decision in hurry as extended time means more work pressure for employees and ofcourse upgradation of facilities for extended working hours.

Why Discounted Cash Flow Valuations Will Make You Question Everything?

In discounted cash flow valuation, the value of an asset is the present value of the expected cash flows on the asset. The cash flow could be either the dividend which is actually paid out to shareholders or free cash flow which is accrued to the firm or to the shareholders. The basic principle behind the DCF models is that every asset has an intrinsic value that can be estimated, based upon its characteristics in terms of cash flows, growth and risk. The information required in order to find out the intrinsic value of any asset using DCF is as following :-

• to estimate the life of the asset
• to estimate the cash flows during the life of the asset
• to estimate the discount rate to apply to these cash flows to get present value

In case of a stock, the assumption of going concern entails that we use perpetuity as our estimated life of a company (and hence stock) unless conditions require assumptions otherwise. The estimate of cash flow could be divided as, Free Cash Flow to Firm (FCFF) or Free Cash Flow to Equity (FCFE) depending upon the exact method of DCF valuation we choose. The discount rate used to deduce the present value should reflect the uncertainty (risk) of the cash flows and opportunity cost of capital. (Please refer to earlier section on Opportunity cost)
